Aunan Lodge

Aunan Lodge - Orkla River

Summary
Norway offers the salmon fisher, the chance of a lifetime for a very large Atlantic salmon, every season fish over forty pounds are landed and the sight of giant fish rolling over the fly is never forgotten. The Orkla River is one of Norway’s finest and offers the visiting anglers beautiful fly water and the chance of a huge fish and is just a short flight from the UK. The river benefits from a guaranteed flow from hydro dams along the river which not only keeps the river topped up but also keeps the temperature down in the height of summer when other rivers are struggling.

The Orkla River is one of Norway’s best salmon rivers and the stretch at Aunan provides some of the most enchanting fly-fishing water available. If the river is seductive then the same can be said for the surroundings in equal measure. Nestled into a tranquil but steeply sloped valley, surrounded by mature woodland and well kept farms and secluded from major roads or railways, this is as much a retreat as it is a great salmon river.

Fishing
The Aunan beat comprises of 12 beats of good fly water and is one of the most productive stretches on the river. The biggest, three sea winter fish, enter the river in June when the water is usually high from snow melt. As the season progresses into July the grilse also start to run, along with a good head of sea trout. As the season moves into August and towards the end of the season there is a run of large backend fish. The Aunan beat is about the size of the middle Dee and historically produces some of the largest fish off the entire river.

Lodge
Built on the banks of the river, the 2 lodges and 2 cabins provide individual rooms and private bathrooms. Comfortable sitting rooms allow the anglers to unwind, as does the hot tub overlooking the river. The food is excellent and lunches can be taken on the river bank.

Equipment
Standard Scottish double handed 15 ft rods and a selection of different lines will allow you to change tactics to suit the conditions. The Orkla fish seem to have a preference for small flies in the summer and because of the clarity of the water flies dressed in somber colours seem to be most effective. Also take a sea trout rod as in early August when there is a couple of hours of darkness the sea trout fishing can be wonderful.
