H&B verdict: The chance to catch the biggest salmon of your life

THE DESTINATION

Norway offers the salmon fisher the chance to catch the largest Atlantic salmon of their lifetime. Every season, fish in excess of 40lbs are landed and the sight of those giant fish rolling over the fly is never forgotten. Just a short flight from the UK, the Orkla River is one of Norway’s finest salmon rivers and offers visiting anglers beautiful fly water and the chance of catching huge fish. It benefits from a guaranteed flow from hydro dams along the river, which not only keep the river topped up but also keep the temperature down in the height of summer when other rivers are struggling.

THE FISHING

With 17 different pools, totaling more than three miles, Aunan offers unrivaled variety on the Orkla. Most of the pools are double bank fishing and the fly water is excellent. The Orkla benefits from controlled flow from Hydro-power stations along its length which ensures that water levels are always suitable for fishing even in times of drought. The dramatic scenery and the feeling of being close to nature are two major features of fishing at the Aunan. No major roads or railways will interfere with your experience of pure nature. Access to the beats is well marked with signed paths and a number of roofed resting places, known as “gapahuk”, where anglers can sit and enjoy a riverside fire. The day generally starts with breakfast at about 8am, after which your guide will transport you to your beat. There will be one guide per four anglers, with guides on hand to advise on tactics and techniques to suit the different conditions. Lunch is generally in the lodge, although a riverside lunch is a popular option. Beats are fished on rotation and rested in the evening, but the beautiful home pool can be fished at any time. Anglers return to the lodge for the evening meal.

THE LODGE

Built on the banks of the river, Aunan offers a variety of comfortable lodging to suit individual needs while maintaining a true camp atmosphere. The two lodges and two cabins have individual rooms and private bathrooms. Cosy sitting rooms allow anglers to unwind, as does the hot tub overlooking the river. The lodges are comfortable and perfectly situated to be able to wander down and cast a fly over the home pool in the evening. Emphasis is placed on local produce for the three meals a day, with saddle of reindeer, local salmon and lamb, the region’s famous strawberries and Norwegian cheeses featuring on the menu.
