LA DORMIDA LODGE

Species: Doves
Season: Year round
H&B verdict: One of the finest shooting lodges in the world

THE DESTINATION

Cordoba is considered the dove shooting capital of the world. The 100 square mile radius around the lodge is annually inhabited by more than 50 million doves, and the birds reproduce over five times per year. The lodge maintains 55 shooting fields, offering a wide range of challenging shooting, all within a short drive through the region’s rolling farmland. La Dormida was designed to be the most exclusive dove shooters’ accommodation ever offered in Cordoba, and it has already received acclaim from Argentina’s interior design magazines. It was built in direct response to requests for a private lodge in which to entertain family and business colleagues. From the moment you arrive in Argentina, the service is personalised and attention is paid to every imaginable detail, from airport reception, to uniformed bird boys in the field. La Dormida is located an hour and a half north of Cordoba International Airport, which is just a one-hour internal flight from Buenos Aires. A Cordoba shooting expedition can be easily combined with an Argentine holiday or a fishing trip for either the sea trout of Patagonia or the golden dorado of the Ibera marshlands.

THE SHOOTING

The day starts around 8am with a hearty breakfast and a short drive to the shoot. In the field you will be assigned a field assistant, who will provide you with shells and refreshments and will direct you to your shooting stand. Normally, the shooting is situated in a flyway, where the doves are flying to and from their roost to grain fields to feed. You will be visited frequently by your head guide who will be available to assist you with any need, and even give you some tips on your shooting if required. Depending on the time of year, you will shoot until noon when you will be treated to an incredible BBQ lunch, shaded by a comfortable safari tent, during which you will taste some of Argentina’s wonderful beef and superb wines. You’ll then take a break and siesta in the hammocks. The afternoon begins around 2.30pm and continues until it’s almost dark. There is no definite time to end the shooting day - good sense and tired shooters dictate when the day is through. You'll then return to the lodge for cocktails and dinner.

THE LODGE

La Dormida is in the secluded foothills of the Sierras Chicas, and is ideal for small groups or a private party that wants a lodge to call their own in complete seclusion. The lodge will house up to 12 people in style and comfort in seven bedrooms with private baths. La Dormida is recently constructed, and the amenities and design of the lodge reflect thoughtful details that will be appreciated by visiting shooters. In addition, La Dormida offers a large dining room with a spectacular dining table, a sitting room and bar, and a large, comfortable courtyard with a fire pit and a plunge pool. There are also many of the important necessities and some extras that you may not expect to find in a shooting lodge, including: a recreation room, gun cleaning table and facilities, telephone, internet access, maid and laundry service, masseuse and even a gift shop offering local artwork and crafts, logo wear and accessories. Historical tours, shopping trips and horseback riding can be arranged Meals at La Dormida feature the very best Argentinean beef and other meats, and the menus are prepared by one of Argentina’s best chefs. Carefully selected Argentinean vintages complement field lunches and dinner in the lodge.
