| H&B verdict: | The finest dove shooting and a rare chance to stay in the elegance of a great 19th century house |
THE DESTINATION
Cordoba is considered the dove shooting capital of the world. The 100 square mile radius around the lodge is annually inhabited by more than 50 million doves, and the birds reproduce over five times per year. The lodge maintains 55 shooting fields, offering a wide range of challenging shooting, all within a short drive through the region’s rolling farmland.
Pica Zuro offers not only prime dove shooting with thousands of targets every day, but also an old world elegance - from the long winding drive, to the high ceilings, fan blinds on the porches and white-jacketed waiters - that makes a stay here not just a sporting expedition but a luxurious and truly relaxing holiday.
Pica Zuro is located an hour and 15 minutes north of Cordoba International Airport, which is just a one-hour internal flight from Buenos Aires.
A Cordoba shooting expedition can be easily combined with an Argentine holiday or a fishing trip for either the sea trout of Patagonia or the golden dorado of the Ibera marshlands.
THE SHOOTING
The day starts around 8am with a hearty breakfast and a short drive to the shoot. In the field you will be assigned a field assistant, who will provide you with shells and refreshments and will direct you to your shooting stand. Normally, the shooting is situated in a flyway, where the doves are flying to and from their roost to grain fields to feed.
You will be visited frequently by your head guide who will be available to assist you with any need, and even give you some tips on your shooting if required.
Depending on the time of year, you will shoot until noon when you will be treated to an incredible BBQ lunch, shaded by a comfortable safari tent, during which you will taste some of Argentina’s wonderful beef and superb wines. You’ll then take a break and siesta in the hammocks.
The afternoon begins around 2.30pm and continues until it’s almost dark. There is no definite time to end the shooting day - good sense and tired shooters dictate when the day is through. You'll then return to the lodge for cocktails and dinner.
Excellent 12, 20 and 28 gauge Beretta, Browning and Benelli guns can be supplied on demand.
THE LODGE
Located at the foot of the “Sierras Chicas”, Pica Zuro is an elegantly restored 19th century house surrounded by wide verandas overlooking lovely gardens, orchards and a lake.
It offers nine en-suite bedrooms to accommodate up to 15 guests, a comfortable living room and spacious fully stocked complimentary bar, a large dining room, billiards table, gun cleaning room with all the amenities, and a pool. There is also satellite television, internet access, a maid and laundry service and an on-staff masseuse, while the lodge’s own shop offers local artwork and crafts, logo wear and accessories.
Food is a serious business at Pica Zuro, one of the few lodges in the world to offer a la carte dining. The field lunches are legendary, and are served al fresco in the shooting area each day. Lunch will feature a variety of meats and salads, grilled dove breasts, a fillet or our tender beef, several varieties of our famous sausages, short ribs, plus lamb, grilled chicken or other meats.
The evening meal is a celebration of fine dining, yet in a casual setting, and it is a chance for the in-house chefs really to shine, though the famous local beef and stunning Malbec wines are always in demand.
This is a working Argentine “Estancia” which currently farms crops and raises cattle, providing an authentic experience of the local culture. For the non-shooting guest, shopping trips and tours of the historic city of Cordoba can be arranged.
