PIRA LODGE

Species: Golden Dorado
Season: January to April is the prime time
H&B verdict: Heart-stopping fishing for one of the most exciting fly rod fish. One of fly fishing’s best-kept secrets

THE DESTINATION

Pira Lodge, set amid the Ibera Marshland of Northern Argentina, had access to more than 3 million acres of the most exciting dorado fishing in the world and offers the discerning angler fine food and stunning accommodation. The freshwater dorado has become the most exciting game fish of recent years. Known as the river tiger, they are as strong as an Atlantic salmon and hit the fly like a steam train. There is still little written about golden dorado fishing, making this truly one of the new fishing frontiers.

THE FISHING

This is saltwater flats-style fishing for the most explosive freshwater fish amid extensive marshlands. Pira’s expert guides will help you hunt own the river tigers at confluences, the edges of eddies, riffles, sharp bends in the current, and close to overhanging carpets of water hyacinth. Large fish are often hooked in narrow runs and skinny water. Fishing is from flats-style skiffs, with large flies and single-handed rods. The morning session is usually from 8am to 12.30pm, followed by lunch back at the lodge and a siesta. Fishing commences again around 3.30pm and the sport continues through until around 7.30pm. You will return to the lodge for cocktails while watching the sunset over the Ibera Marshlands.

THE LODGE

The lodge at Pira has a deserved reputation as one of the finest in the world, set in the Ibera marshlands, an area two and a half times larger than the Florida Everglades. The lodge has five bedrooms, each fully air conditioned, with two double beds and large bathrooms that provide a peaceful space in which to unwind in a warm bath. The room’s French windows open out to the shaded veranda with easy access to the 20-metre pool and a beautiful view of the surrounding wilderness. In addition to the comfort of a spacious sitting room, with unique furniture crafted by local artisans, anglers will appreciate the convenience of a fly tying table and an on-site fly shop, fully equipped with flies, rods, reels and clothing.
