THE DESTINATION
The Skeena river system is one of the ultimate playgrounds for the fly fisher. With an almost unlimited availability of water, the rivers host huge runs of steelhead (sea-run rainbow trout) and multiple species of Pacific salmon, including Kings and Silver, all in a pristine, northern wilderness. Spey Lodge is strategically situated on the banks of the Skeena River, east of Terrace in northern British Columbia, and minutes from the Copper River. The fishing lodge is close to many of the lower tributaries of the Skeena and the numerous rivers that flow directly into the ocean. Spey Lodge is situated on the lower Skeena River to intercept bright fish in the early stages of their migrations. The lodge is only 15 minutes away from Terrace Airport where small commercial jets fly guests in from Vancouver.
THE FISHING
This part of British Columbia is as wild as Alaska with all species of Pacific salmon running the rivers alongside the sparkling steelhead. Depending on the time of year, anglers can target huge King salmon or fresh-run silvers, pinks, sockeye and chum salmon as well as trout and the prized steelhead. Particularly exciting is Spey lodge’s new “channel” operation, which gives guests the option of spending a number of days in a tented camp on prime, remote water on the lower river, where the fishing is little short of mind-blowing. Everywhere there is Spey casting water to die for, and all guides are expert Spey casters and are always on hand to advise on tactics and techniques to suit the different conditions. Spey casting lessons, if required, are included in the package, though anglers can fish with a single handed 8-weight if they prefer. There will be one guide to every two anglers. The day generally starts with breakfast at 8am, after which, depending on the target species, fishers will either use jet boats to reach the fishing or will access the tributaries of the main river by drift boat. The morning session is followed by a hearty lunch cooked on an open fire on the river bank. After a full afternoon session anglers return to the lodge to enjoy the evening meal before relaxing on the veranda as the sun sets, swapping stories of the huge fish landed or lost.
THE LODGE
Everything is included at Spey lodge, including all flies, tippet, the use of premium double-handed rods and even waders, meaning anglers can travel without any equipment, if they wish, and still fish kitted out with all the latest equipment. Spey Lodge sits right on the banks of the mighty Skeena River and has a maximum capacity of just six anglers. It has private rooms and bathrooms along with a large lounge, dining room and all other necessary amenities. Despite its wilderness location, the accommodation is comfortable and guests are always looked after incredibly well by the lodge staff.
