The Rio Grande deserves its reputation as one of the finest fishing locations in the world, with spectacular sea trout and stunning Patagonian vistas. Villa Maria has private fishing on both banks of 15km of prime water, with stunning pools ranging from cut banks to long glides that are a joy to fish with a double-handed rod. Every week fish of 20lb are caught and released and fish over 30lb are a real possibility. Wading is easy over a fine gravel bottom and guides take anglers directly to their pools in 4X4 vehicles. Anglers fish the morning session before taking a traditional Argentine barbecue, or asado, lunch in what must be the world’s best appointed fishing hut, equipped with veranda, bar, luxury bedrooms and showers. After a well-earned siesta, anglers return to the river to fish until the magical dusk hours. The famous Patagonian wind may blow, but that only improves the fishing and, as it is almost always in a downstream direction, it rarely hampers the fishing.

Situated on a working estancia, Villa Maria lodge is a renovated farm house designed to offer rods maximum comfort during their fishing trip, as well as easy accessibility to the pools. It accommodates up to six rods with ample twin and double bedrooms to allow for single or double occupancy. A large living room area opens up to vistas of the Menendez valley and Rio Grande valley. A large, roaring fire and well-stocked bar will welcome you after every fishing session. The lodge has a full tackle shop and guests can always use the fly tying table. Villa Maria offers gourmet cuisine based on local meats, including the famed Argentine beef, fresh vegetables and delicious deserts. Villa Maria’s cellars feature a wonderful selection of fine wines from the Luigi Bosca Bodega, which will be served during lunch and dinner.
