Some of the factors to consider when choosing a trip:
1. What time of year do you want to shoot?
2. Do you want particularly high driven birds, or a wider range of shots?
3. Are you focused on a particular species, or would you like a variety of shooting?
4. What size of bag do you wish to shoot?
5. How far do you wish to travel?
6. Do you want a week-long trip or a weekend shooting break?
7. Are you traveling alone, with a small group or a whole team of guns?
8. Will you take a non-shooting partner?
9. Do you want to combine shooting with a fishing or sight-seeing trip?
10. Do you need guns provided at the destination?
If you give us a list of your requirements, H&B’s shooting experts will be pleased to advise on the shooting destinations that would suit you best.
SHOOTING
Many shooting enthusiasts are realising that they do not have to put away their shotguns for months after the end of their winter season.
Shooting in breathtaking scenery in glorious sunshine, in shirt sleeves, with a cold beer at hand, a luxurious barbecue lunch and perhaps a siesta in a hammock may not be what many shooting people are used to - but they soon get to like it.
The best international shooting lodges offer the most challenging birds with sophisticated hospitality and can accommodate individual guns or teams for anything from a couple of days’ shooting to a week-long expedition.
Our first choice to beat the closed-season blues is the spectacular dove shooting in the Cordoba region of Argentina. These tiny birds can provide the most testing shots as they fly between the hills and their feeding grounds amid the lush crop pastures of the region.
The sheer numbers of Argentine doves is staggering, but don’t be misled by the large bag numbers you may hear. Choose your shots and these birds are as tricky as any, allowing guns of all abilities to focus on shots that are as high as their skill will allow.
Argentine doves can be shot almost all year, and trips are suitable for individual guns or groups. Dove shooting is a popular add-on to our sea trout fishing trips to southern Patagonia, creating what must rate as possibly the ultimate cast and blast expedition.
Spain is another prime choice for shooting in the sunshine, with the estates in La Mancha providing some of the most challenging high partridge shooting found anywhere. With easy access from the UK and other parts of Europe, a Spanish partridge trip is easily managed in a long weekend or can be combined with a few days in Madrid.
A Spanish partridge trip is an ideal way to warm-up for the UK season or to extend your season, as shooting continues into February.
Transporting your shotguns need not be a headache as the best lodges can supply excellent quality over and under or side by side guns. But if you do wish to take your own guns, H&B’s experienced team will help with all the arrangements.
Of course, the UK has shooting to rival the best in the world, and none is finer than the wild grouse shooting on the high moors of northern England and Scotland, considered by aficionados to be the ultimate shooting thrill.
Whether you are UK native or a visitor from overseas, if you are looking for grouse or pheasant shooting in the UK, H&B’s shooting team can help.
